Singara was a Roman frontier garrison town on the edge of Mesopotamia, and its brief civic coinage under Gordian III reflects the city's elevation in importance during the renewed Sassanid campaigns of the early 240s. Tranquillina, Gordian's wife, appears on provincial bronzes from several eastern mints — her presence signals the imperial court's proximity to the eastern frontier, as Gordian personally led the campaign against Shapur I that culminated near these very territories.
Gordian died in early 244 under disputed circumstances — either in battle or murdered at the instigation of Philip the Arab. Singara's civic bronze issues effectively end with him.
