| Beschrijving voorzijde | Confronted busts of the Emperor Gordian III and the god Sarapis facing one another: Gordian III appears laureate, draped, and cuirassed to the right as seen from behind, while Sarapis faces left, draped and wearing his characteristic modius crown, with a cornucopia visible behind his left shoulder. The imperial legend encircles the periphery of the flan in Greek majuscules. The composition reflects the standard provincial double-bust type associating the reigning emperor with a prominent local deity, a device frequently employed at Odessos during the Severan and Gordian periods. |
