Obverse description Confronted busts of Emperor Gordian III and the god Sarapis facing one another across the field: Gordian III depicted laureate, draped, and cuirassed to the right as seen from the front, while Sarapis appears draped to the left wearing his characteristic modius crown, with a cornucopia placed behind his shoulder. The imperial and divine pairing reflects the syncretic religious iconography favored at Odessos, where the cult of Sarapis held particular civic importance. The obverse legend encircles the busts in Greek characters.

Additional information

Odessos — modern Varna on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast — was among the most prolific provincial mints of the Gordian III period, producing an unusually wide range of denominations and reverse types. The Ε in the inscription almost certainly denotes a magistrate's initial rather than a denomination mark, situating this piece within a local civic coinage system that operated in parallel with imperial issues without any central Roman authorization over its specific types.
