Cius, on the southeastern shore of the Propontis, had been a Greek colonial foundation since at least the sixth century BC and passed through Macedonian, Seleucid, and eventually Roman hands before settling into the quiet administrative life of a Bithynian provincial town. Under Elagabalus it continued issuing civic bronze — the city retained that right — though the emperor's four-year reign ended with his murder by the Praetorian Guard in 222, his body dragged through Rome's streets and thrown into the Tiber.
