| Obverse description | Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Caracalla facing right, depicted from the rear, with the paludamentum visible over the left shoulder and the cuirass articulated with pteryges. The imperial effigy is rendered in the characteristic Severan style with a pronounced brow. The encircling Greek legend runs around the periphery of the flan. |

Behind the rocks, a serpent rears erect, a symbol commonly associated with civic cult and the founding mythology of Nicomedia. The composition reflects the city's pride in its twice-neocorate status, as proclaimed in the surrounding legend. |
