| Beschrijving keerzijde | The serpent Glycon depicted coiled upon itself, with its distinctive human-like bearded head turned to the right, the sinuous body shown in multiple coils. Glycon was a serpent deity closely associated with the cult of Alexander of Abonoteichus and venerated throughout Bithynia; this reverse type is characteristic of Nicomedian civic pride. The encircling Greek legend proclaims the city's twice-neocorate status. The design occupies the central field with the legend distributed around the periphery. |
