| Beschrijving keerzijde | Demeter stands facing with her head turned to the right, depicted in full figure and attired in a long peplos with a veil and kalathos (grain basket) crown upon her head. In her right hand she holds a long torch, and in her left she grasps a bundle of wheat ears, both attributes emblematic of her role as goddess of the harvest and fertility. The reverse legend, arranged around the field, identifies the issuing city and proclaims its distinction as twice neocorate, reflecting Nicomedia's honored status as twice guardian of the imperial cult. The composition is characteristic of the civic bronze coinage produced under Caracalla at the Nicomedian mint. |
