Year Two of Vespasian's reign in Egypt began before it did anywhere else — the legions at Alexandria proclaimed him emperor on July 1, 69 AD, nearly five months before the Senate in Rome formally ratified the acclamation. Egyptian regnal dating followed its own calendar, and Alexandrian bronzes from this narrow window carry a chronological precision that Roman provincial issues rarely permit: they can be assigned to a specific twelve-month period with unusual confidence.
