The magistrate named in this coin's inscription — M. Salvius Otho Titianus, serving as proconsul of Bithynia-Pontus — was the elder brother of the emperor Otho, who ruled for a mere three months in 69 AD before suicide at Bedriacum. Titianus had served as consul in 52 AD and survived the Year of the Four Emperors, eventually living into Vespasian's reign. The Koinon's decision to strike under his name while acknowledging Vespasian reflects the careful political realignment provincial administrations performed after each succession in that chaotic year.
