| Reverse description | Tetrastyle temple with arcuated (arched) lintel rendered in frontal elevation, the pediment supported by four fluted columns on a stepped stylobate. Within the intercolumniation stands the cult statue of Samian Hera, depicted frontally in the characteristic xoanon tradition of the Heraion of Samos. The ethnic legend ϹΑΜΙΩΝ appears in the field, identifying the issuing civic authority. The overall composition reflects the civic pride of Samos in its celebrated sanctuary, one of the largest temples of the ancient Greek world. |
