| Beschrijving keerzijde | A togate priest guides a yoke of two oxen to the right, holding a long staff or goad, in the act of ritually ploughing the colonial boundary — a standard founding-myth motif of Roman colonial coinage. Above the scene, an eagle perches atop a palm branch, holding a wreath in its beak, symbolising the colony's prestige and divine favour. In the exergue, the river god Chaboras (Khabur) is depicted reclining or swimming, referencing the local river. The reverse legend ϹΕΠ ΚΟΛ ΡΗϹΑΙΝΗϹΙωΝ L III P identifies the issuing city as the Septimian Colony of Rhesaena, with the regnal year and priestly title. The overall composition is characteristic of Mesopotamian provincial bronzes under the Severan and later imperial series. |
