Emerita Augusta (modern Mérida, Spain) was founded around 25 BC as a settlement for veterans — *emeriti* — discharged from Augustus's Legio V Alaudae and Legio X Gemina following the Cantabrian Wars. The colony held the rank of *colonia*, governed its own coinage, and was the administrative capital of Lusitania. Issues struck under Tiberius continued the Augustan colonial series, with the colony's name carried prominently in the legend as a mark of civic status rather than imperial instruction.
RPC I 42 is among the better-documented of the Emeritan bronzes, though die alignment and flan quality vary considerably across surviving specimens.
