Thyatira, a Lydian city better known from its textile and dyeing guilds than its civic coinage, struck prolifically under the Severan dynasty as part of the broader competitive practice of Greek cities demonstrating loyalty through imperial portraiture. The conventus of Pergamum administered considerable civic autonomy in bronze coinage, and Thyatira took consistent advantage of it throughout Alexander's thirteen-year reign.

The city appears in the New Testament as one of the Seven Churches of Revelation — a detail that has driven more collector interest in Thyatiran bronzes than the coins themselves strictly warrant.
