背面描述 Standing cult statue of Ares facing, depicted frontally upon a two-tiered rectangular base, rendered in the manner of a divine effigy or xoanon. The god holds a sword in his raised right hand and carries a spear and shield in his left, the martial attributes clearly delineated despite the worn surface of this provincial issue. The figure stands in a rigid, hieratic posture consistent with the representation of cult images on eastern provincial bronzes. The Greek legend ΡΑΒΒΑΘΜωΒΗΝω ΑΡΗϹ surrounds the type, identifying the deity and the issuing city of Rabbath-Moba in Arabia.

附加信息

Rabbath-Moba — Roman Areopolis, modern Rabbah in Jordan — was a minor Nabataean city absorbed into the province of Arabia Petraea after Trajan's annexation in 106 AD. Bronze civic issues from this mint are scarce across all reigns, but those struck under Septimius Severus in the final years of his life are particularly thinly represented in collections. He died at Eboracum in February 211, mid-campaign in Britain, leaving these late provincial issues from the eastern mints as some of the last coinage authorized under his sole reign.
