Nicaea was one of the most prolific civic minting centers in Bithynia under the Severan dynasty, producing a dense and often poorly catalogued series of bronze issues. The city had long competed with neighboring Nicomedia for provincial primacy — a rivalry that played out not just politically but in the volume and ambition of locally struck coinage.
