Beschrijving keerzijde Tyche, the personification of the city's fortune, depicted standing facing with head turned to the left. In her right hand she holds a ship's rudder, symbolizing the guidance of destiny, while her left hand bears a cornucopia, emblematic of abundance and civic prosperity. The design is a standard civic type employed widely by Bithynian mints under the Severan dynasty. The ethnic legend ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ encircles the field, identifying the issuing city of Nicaea.

Aanvullende informatie

Nicaea was one of the most prolific civic minting authorities in Bithynia under the Severan dynasty, producing a wide range of bronze denominations for local circulation while Rome itself focused on silver and gold. The city's coins circulated within a regional economy that had little use for imperial precious metal issues in everyday transactions.

The broad date range reflects the full span of Septimius Severus's reign — he came to power after defeating his rivals in the Year of the Five Emperors, a civil war that ended at the Battle of Lugdunum in 197 AD.
