The portrait exhibits the characteristic bearded physiognomy of Severus with detailed drapery folds at the shoulder. | Beschrijving keerzijde | Asclepius, the god of medicine, standing facing with head turned to the left. His left hand rests at his hip while his right hand supports the serpent-entwined staff (caduceus rod of Asclepius), a standard attribute of the deity. The figure is rendered in the classical Greek provincial style. The reverse legend surrounding the figure records the civic identity of the issuing community and the name of the presiding archon, Menekrates. The composition reflects the strong association between the island of Cos and the cult of Asclepius, birthplace of Hippocrates. |
