Iuliopolis occupied a strategically awkward position in inland Bithynia — small enough to be routinely overlooked by ancient sources, yet significant enough to maintain a continuous civic bronze coinage through the Severan period. The city had been refounded by Nicomedes IV of Bithynia and later absorbed into the Roman province, retaining the right to strike local bronzes as a civic privilege rather than an economic necessity.
Issues attributable to Septimius Severus from this mint are genuinely scarce in the market, a reflection of limited original production rather than attrition from circulation.
