Amastris was a Greek colonial foundation on the Black Sea coast, reportedly established by — and named after — a niece of Darius III who had previously been married to Craterus, one of Alexander's generals. Under Severus, the city retained enough civic autonomy to strike its own bronze, and the Parthenios river, local to the region, was a recurring source of civic pride on Pontic civic issues rather than any imperial directive.
