Obverse description Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Philip I (Philip the Arab) facing right, depicted from the rear in the characteristic three-quarter back view. The radiate crown with pointed rays frames the imperial effigy, while the paludamentum and scale armor (lorica squamata) are rendered in low relief. The encircling Greek legend reads Μ ΙΟΥΛΙΟϹ ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟϹ ΑΥΓ, identifying the emperor as Marcus Julius Philippus Augustus. The flan is irregular and the surfaces show heavy earthen patina consistent with provincial bronze coinage of the mid-third century AD.
