Descrizione del rovescio Poppaea Sabina, assimilated to the goddess Kore (Persephone), seated left on a throne or chair, rendered in full figure with drapery falling in folds across her lap and legs. She holds a poppy in her outstretched right hand and a tall sceptre in her left hand, attributes closely associated with the chthonic goddess Kore. The encircling Greek legend ΠΟΠΠΑΙΑ(Ϲ) ϹΕΒΑ(Ϲ)ΤΗ ΚΛΑΥΔΕΙΚΟΝΙΕωΝ identifies her as Augusta and names the civic authority of Claudiconium.

Informazioni aggiuntive

Poppaea Sabina appears on civic bronze from Iconium precisely because Nero wanted her elevation — he divorced Octavia in 62 AD, exiled and executed her, and married Poppaea within weeks. Provincial cities in Galatia that issued coinage honoring the new empress were signaling loyalty to a politically dangerous new arrangement. Iconium, a Claudian colony, had particular reason to perform that loyalty publicly.

Poppaea's numismatic presence is brief. She died in 65 AD, likely from a kick delivered by Nero himself during a domestic argument.
