Corinth was refounded as a Roman colony by Julius Caesar in 44 BC, nearly a century after Lucius Mummius had razed the Greek city to rubble. The colonial mint resumed activity intermittently through the imperial period, and issues under Marcus Aurelius coincide with his co-reign alongside Lucius Verus — the first time Rome had operated under two simultaneous augusti.
The Isthmia reference ties this coin to the Isthmian Games, administered from Corinth since the city's refoundation. Corinthian civic bronzes referencing the games are well-attested but not abundant.
