Additional information

Pitane was a small coastal city in Aeolis whose civic coinage under the Antonines reflects the administrative reorganization of Asia Minor into judicial districts — the conventus system — centered on Pergamum. The city had ancient roots, claiming mythological descent from Poseidon, but by the second century its bronze issues were modest in scale and largely functional for local exchange. The magistrate name ΑΝΘΟΥ (genitive of Anthos) appearing in the legend dates this piece within the early joint reign of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, before the latter's death in 169.
