Antioch ad Maeandrum was a small Carian city whose civic coinage under Marcus Aurelius falls within the early co-reign period with Lucius Verus, when provincial mints across Asia Minor responded to the new emperors with bursts of bronze production. The city's output was never large, and pieces attributable to this specific conventus assignment — Alabanda rather than the more prominent Lydian or Phrygian groupings — turn up infrequently in trade.
The Maeander river valley location gave the city its distinguishing epithet, separating it from the Syrian Antioch and the dozen-odd other Antiochs competing for imperial favor.
