Additional information

Cyzicus held the title of neokoros — temple warden of the imperial cult — a distinction granted by Rome and fiercely competed for among the cities of Asia Minor. The abbreviation ΝΕΟΚΟ on this issue is a public assertion of that status, struck during the co-regency of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus between 177 and 180 AD, a period when Cyzicus was actively leveraging its relationship with Rome amid the pressure of the Marcomannic Wars draining imperial attention northward.
