His left arm leans upon a knotted serpent-entwined staff (the caduceus of Asclepius), which rises vertically beside him. The reverse circular legend ΜΗΤ ΝΕΩΚο ΝΕΙΚοΜΗΔ identifies the issuing city as Nicomedia, metropolis and neokoros, rendered in Greek characters around the periphery. The type reflects the strong civic pride of Nicomedia and its association with healing cult worship. |
