Odessos, the Greek colonial city on the Black Sea coast now occupied by modern Varna in Bulgaria, maintained civic bronze coinage through the Severan and Gordian periods largely because the region sat uncomfortably close to Gothic pressure building north of the Danube. Provincial issues from this mint dried up almost entirely after Gordian III's successor Philip the Arab — the city's autonomous coinage effectively ended as the third-century crisis tightened imperial control over local monetary production.
