| Obverse description | Bare-headed bust of the deified hero Heracles facing left, draped in the Nemean lion skin knotted at the chest, with the scalp visible over the head; the hero holds a club over his shoulder. The bust is rendered in the heroic provincial style typical of Bithynian civic coinage of the mid-third century AD. A dotted border encircles the type. The obverse legend ΤΟΝ ΚΤΙϹΤΑΝ, meaning 'for the founder,' appears in the field, identifying Heracles as the mythological founder of Heraclea Pontica. |
