Antioch on the Maeander was a small Carian city that punched above its weight in civic coinage during the third century, issuing bronze throughout the chaos of the Crisis of the Third Empire — a period when Gallienus was simultaneously fighting usurpers on the Rhine, the Danube, and in the east following his father Valerian's capture by Shapur I in 260 AD. Provincial civic bronze of this type filled a genuine gap: central imperial mints were overwhelmed with silver and billon, leaving local populations dependent on city issues for everyday exchange.
