Aphrodisias enjoyed an unusually privileged relationship with Rome — the city claimed descent from Aphrodite, and Julius Caesar had extended formal patronage to it, a bond later emperors were careful to maintain. During Gallienus's sole reign, after the capture of his father Valerian by Shapur I in 260 AD, the city continued striking civic bronze while much of the eastern provincial network was collapsing under Sassanid pressure and the breakaway Palmyrene sphere of influence.
The Conventus of Alabanda was a Roman judicial district in Caria, and Aphrodisias functioned as one of its most administratively active centers. Civic coinage ceased across most of Asia Minor within a decade of this issue.
