Corinth's civic bronze issues under Commodus belong to a period when the city was functioning as the Roman colony Colonia Laus Iulia Corinthiensis — a status it held since refoundation by Julius Caesar in 44 BC, over two centuries before this piece was struck. Provincial bronzes from Achaea dried up sharply after Commodus; the administrative disruptions following his murder in 192 and the subsequent civil wars effectively ended most Peloponnesian civic mint activity for years.
