Buthrotum — modern Butrint in Albania — held the status of a Roman colony, having been refounded under Julius Caesar and later reinforced by Augustus. Its colonial coinage was a civic assertion of that privileged status. The abbreviation C C I B in the legend identifies the Colonia Claudia Iulia Buthrotum, and the D D notation signals a decree of the local duoviri, the magistrates responsible for authorizing the issue.
Bronze provincial coinage of this weight from Buthrotum is scarce; the colony appears to have struck in limited quantities throughout the Julio-Claudian period.
