Alexandria Troas held the status of a Roman colony — Colonia Augusta Troas — granted under Augustus, which gave it the right to produce bronze coinage using Roman iconography and Latin legends rather than the Greek typical of most eastern civic mints. That colonial privilege is precisely what this coin reflects. Caracalla's reign saw a notable uptick in colonial bronze production across the eastern provinces, partly driven by chronic shortages of small-denomination imperial coinage reaching Asia Minor from Rome and the western mints.
