Pergamum's status as the leading city of the Roman province of Asia was fiercely contested — most visibly against Smyrna and Ephesus — and civic coinage like this issue functioned squarely within that rivalry. The city had held the title of first neokoros, keeper of the imperial cult temple, since the reign of Augustus, and bronze issues struck at the accession of a new emperor were part of how Pergamum publicly renewed its claim to precedence. Antoninus Pius came to power in 138 AD following Hadrian's death, and the rapid appearance of coins honoring him reflects the speed with which provincial mints moved to demonstrate loyalty at each succession.
