Reverse description Cybele, the Phrygian mother goddess, enthroned and seated to the left upon an ornate throne, extending her right hand forward to hold a patera, while her left arm rests upon a tympanum. A lion, the sacred animal of Cybele, is depicted in the lower field advancing to the left. The reverse reflects the strong local religious traditions of Nicaea and Bithynia, where the cult of Cybele was prominently venerated. The legend ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ appears in the field identifying the issuing city.
