Additional information

Nicaea's civic bronze issues under Severus Alexander are among the more prolific of the Bithynian series — the city was aggressively asserting its rivalry with Nicomedia throughout the third century, and volume of coinage was part of that competition. The two cities fought a running propaganda war over which held legitimate claim to the title of regional metropolis, a dispute settled by Rome's periodic and often inconsistent rulings.

SNG von Aulock 3143 anchors this piece within a well-documented but densely populated series, where die links across magistrate issues remain only partially catalogued.
