Reverse description The mythological hero Pelops is depicted as a dynamic equestrian figure, shown at full gallop to the right atop a prancing horse, his arm raised and holding a whip in a gesture evoking the chariot race tradition of the hero's legend. The design fills the field with vigorous movement, the horse's forelegs raised and hindquarters powerfully rendered. The surrounding Greek legend identifies both the city of Sardis with its twice-neocorate status and the heroic subject, asserting the city's pride in its Pelopid mythological heritage.
