Nicomedia had held neokorate status — the honor of maintaining an imperial cult temple — since the reign of Augustus, and by the time Maximinus Thrax took power in 235 the city had accumulated it twice, which is precisely what ΔΙϹ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ proclaims. Maximinus never set foot in the eastern provinces during his reign; he spent the entirety of it campaigning on the Rhine and Danube frontiers, making civic bronzes like this one the primary medium through which his image was disseminated to Greek-speaking populations.
