正面描述 Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Maximinus Thrax facing right, depicted from behind, showing the elaborate musculature of the cuirass and the paludamentum fastened at the shoulder. The effigy is rendered in the characteristically robust, military style associated with this emperor. The surrounding legend, partially visible on the irregular flan, reads Γ ΙΟΥ ΟΥΗ ΜΑΞΙΜΕΙΝΟϹ ΑΥΓ, giving the full imperial titulature of Gaius Julius Verus Maximinus Augustus. A beaded border frames the design.

附加信息

Nicaea was among the most productive civic minting centers in Bithynia during the Severan and post-Severan periods, and its output under Maximinus Thrax reflects the awkward position of Greek eastern cities under a soldier-emperor who had no interest in Hellenic culture and almost certainly never visited the region. Maximinus never set foot in Rome during his entire reign, let alone the eastern provinces.

The city's mint continued striking under its own civic authority — ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ identifying the issuing community — a privilege that persisted until Gallienus effectively ended most provincial bronze coinage in the 260s.
