Abila was one of the cities of the Decapolis, a loosely affiliated league of Hellenized urban centers in the eastern Roman provinces, and its civic bronze coinage under Marcus Aurelius reflects the city's right to strike local issues granted under Roman provincial administration. The city's era dating — visible in the reference system — follows the Pompeian era beginning 63 BC, tying Abila's civic identity directly to Pompey's reorganization of the Levant.
Provincial issues from this corner of Arabia are frequently underrepresented in major collections, and die studies for Abilene civic coinage remain incomplete.
