| Beschrijving keerzijde | Bearded Heracles standing nude, facing left, with weight resting on his right leg in a relaxed contrapposto stance. In his right hand he holds a cantharus (drinking cup), while his left arm supports his characteristic club, with the Nemean lion skin draped over the same arm. The reverse legend, partially preserved, names the strategos Claudius Proclus the Sophist as civic magistrate of Smyrna, with the civic ethnic ϹΜΥΡ visible at the end of the inscription. The type reflects the strong civic pride of Smyrna in its mythological and cultural heritage during the Antonine period. |
