Acrasus was a small Lydian city of middling importance whose coin output was sporadic and tied closely to the tenure of individual Roman administrators. The magistrate named in this issue's legend held the strategia — a civic office that, by the Antonine period, had become largely ceremonial but carried the privilege of authorizing local bronze coinage, which explains why so many provincial series are indexed by magistrate rather than by year.

The years 177–179 coincide with Marcus Aurelius's co-reign with Commodus, elevated to Augustus in 177 shortly before his father departed for the final Marcomannic campaign, from which Marcus would not return alive.
