Additional information

Smyrna held the title of neokoros — temple warden of the imperial cult — three times, a distinction it pursued aggressively through civic embassies to Rome and considerable local expenditure. The Γ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ designation on this issue marks that third grant, awarded under Caracalla and still proudly advertised decades later under Gordian III as a piece of civic identity as much as religious office.
