Heraclea Pontica's civic bronze coinage continued well into the third century despite the catastrophic instability of the period — during Gallienus's sole reign after 260, the city was navigating the fragmentation of the empire following Valerian's capture by Shapur I at Edessa. The retention of the neokoros title in the legend reflects the city's insistence on its honorific religious status, granted for maintaining an imperial cult temple, even as central authority collapsed around it.
