Cyzicus held the rare distinction of being a thrice-neokoros city — a status granted by Rome for hosting three imperial cult temples — and coins of this period frequently advertise that honor as civic currency in the most literal sense. The magistrate name recorded here, Asklepiades, appears across a cluster of issues from Gallienus's sole reign after Valerian's capture by Shapur I in 260 AD left the western empire without a co-emperor for the first time in decades.
Provincial bronze of this type circulated almost entirely within its issuing city's economic zone and was demonetized with little ceremony once the Diocletianic reforms standardized coinage across the empire.
