| Reverse description | A male heroic figure, possibly a local deity or mythological hero, stands facing with head turned to the left, clad in a long chiton reaching to the feet. His right hand is extended and rests upon the head of a lion positioned to his right rear, a compositional element evoking mastery over the beast and civic or divine protection. The reverse legend, arranged around the periphery in Greek script, identifies the issuing city and its honorific neocorate status. The type reflects the civic pride of Sardis in its role as a twice-honored neocorate city within the Roman provincial cult system. |
