Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of Emperor Domitian facing right, rendered in the provincial style typical of Samaritan civic coinage. The imperial effigy is depicted with a bold profile, the laurel wreath clearly articulated against the flan. The circular Greek legend surrounds the bust, reading ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑΤΩΡ ΔΟΜΙΤΙΑΝΟΣ ΚΑΙΣΑΡ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΣ, identifying the emperor by his full titulature.

Additional information

Neapolis — ancient Shechem's successor city, refounded by Vespasian in 72 AD on the slopes of Mount Gerizim — began issuing civic bronze almost immediately after its founding, making this early Domitianic piece among the first generations of coinage struck there. The city's calendar era, reflected in the date on this coin, begins from that Flavian refoundation, a deliberate civic reset that erased the site's association with the Jewish revolt. The Samaritan population retained deep attachment to Gerizim as their sacred mountain, a tension that would eventually erupt in the revolt under Zeno-Hadrian centuries later.
