Domitian's eighth regnal year in Egypt — the date encoded in the Greek letter eta on this issue — fell during a period when the Alexandrian mint was producing at considerable volume to supply a province with no autonomous silver coinage of its own. Egypt remained a closed monetary system under Rome: foreign coins were exchanged at the border and melted, keeping Alexandrian bronze and billon in strict local circulation. This piece never left Egypt in antiquity.
