This issue belongs to the homonoia coinage produced between Smyrna and Athens — a genre of civic diplomacy conducted in bronze, where two cities publicly advertised their friendship and shared religious identity through joint coin issues. The pairing of Smyrna with Athens carried deliberate prestige; Athens was the undisputed cultural capital of the Greek world, and smaller Asian cities pursued these alliances partly to borrow that cachet. Smyrna was aggressive in this practice, producing more documented homonoia issues than almost any other city in the Conventus.
