Patras — formally refounded as Colonia AAugusta Aroe Patrensis by Augustus around 14 BC — was one of the few Roman colonies established in Greece proper, settled largely with veterans from the Actian campaign. The colonial mint operated intermittently under the Julio-Claudians, and issues attributable to Claudius's reign are distinguished partly by the colonial duovir names occasionally embedded in the reverse legends, tying specific coins to local magistrates whose tenures are otherwise unattested in surviving records.
